These days, when you say graphic design the platform that pops up is no longer Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. It will most likely be Canva.

And why not?

It’s a powerful tool and it’s easily accessible for most people. That said, it’s not your only option.

Let me walk you through a list of the best Canva competitors to help you find the right fit. Keep reading to find out more.

Why should I choose Canva?

The app is an incredibly powerful tool for creating graphics of any kind that you can use for marketing, presentations, and even schoolwork. Its intuitive user interface is designed to help beginners and design noobs create stunning graphics at the drop of a hat.

Additionally, I’m quite fond of its user interface. The mobile app is easy to use, and great for on-the-go graphic design. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used it when I’m in need of some graphics for my last-minute campaigns.

Other than that, here are some other things you need to consider:

Thousands of templates

The platform’s template library is extensive. There are more than just a handful of options. In fact, there are thousands.

And I think you’ll quite enjoy sorting through them since they’re all categorized according to their layout. You can choose the kind of templates you’re looking for from Instagram posts to mobile-first presentations.

Smart resizing

So let’s say that you’re working on a project and you realize you need it in a different size. It would be a shame to start over or compromise the integrity of the design by simply resizing your canvas, right?

This feature automatically moves your elements around so that your original image is preserved, but in a different size. It’s really handy for switching between Instagram posts and stories with the same layout.

Brand kit

I really appreciate how you’re able to save color palettes that you frequently use. The same can be said for fonts. So they’re more accessible as you’re editing and you don’t have to look for them or type in their hex codes. This is especially helpful if you’re creating branded content.

“Save as” feature

When you’re saving your graphics, you can choose to save them as a transparent PNG, JPEG, PDF, or even as a GIF. There are plenty of options, and I really like how it turns out to be a nearly all-in-one tool that isn’t complicated.

Why you shouldn’t choose Canva

There are obviously a lot of factors that play into making your choice. And I could go on and on about the benefits, but that doesn’t mean it will help you make a well-informed decision. So let’s talk briefly about why the platform wouldn’t be a good choice for you.

The mobile app

While admittedly convenient, the mobile app can get buggy. Sometimes it doesn’t save changes you’ve made. And sometimes, when you’re trying to download your files, it appears completely different from what it looks like on the screen. It gets frustrating, but one way to get around this is to download from a desktop.

Monthly fees

Whether you opt for the annual or monthly billing option, there’s no denying that it might be somewhat heavy for startups. I’m not saying it’s expensive, but paying above $10 a month might be a deal-breaker for you.

Basic design tools

Despite how powerful it is, it can’t compare to the likes of Photoshop. Sure, it’s easier to use, and there are plenty of features. But you’re still somewhat limited. For example, they’ve only recently added a curve effect for text. Before that, you had to do it manually.

Limited animation capability

While you can get your pick of various animated elements on the platform, it’s not that robust when it really boils down to it. Of course, you’ll be able to create animated videos and gifs from scratch. But it can be more trouble than it’s worth most of the time if you don’t have the patience.

6 Canva alternatives for easy graphic design

Now that you know what the platform has to offer and what it lacks, it’s time to take a look at the top Canva competitors. Take note that these are graphic design tools designed for every kind of graphic designer. So you will need to exercise your judgment here to figure out the right one for you.

Just don’t forget to consider the price, feature set, and user intuitiveness. Let’s get started.

Wepik - Best for small businesses designs

Wepik is a free online editing tool that makes it easy to create stunning templates for various types of personal or business projects. Users can customize templates using Wepik and personalize them with their own images and text to give them a professional appearance.

The templates are user-friendly and intuitive, so even inexperienced users can easily learn how to use the platform. In addition, there are plenty of options available for customizing templates, such as colors, fonts, backgrounds, and more. Users also have access to a library of stock photographs and graphics that they may use to customize their templates. Overall, Wepik is an amazing choice for anyone searching for a simple online editing tool with multiple customization choices!

When it comes to online editing tools, two of the most popular options are Wepik and Canva. Both platforms include templates for a variety of projects, as well as a library of stock photographs and graphics that users can incorporate into own designs. However, there are some significant points that make Wepik a strong competitor.

  • Access a library of stock photos and graphics to customize templates - Wepik has over a thousand templates to pick from, all with different sizes and designs. These templates allow users to design visuals for a lot of options, including business cards, flyers, banners, and posters. The templates are also tailored to individual tasks, such as presentations, brochures, and websites. Wepik's templates allow customers to simply edit their graphics with the appropriate fonts and colors to match their brand's identity. They can also include photos or artwork related to the theme or product they are advertising.
  • Additional Features — Wepik's strength comes in its unique features, which it offers in addition to resources from Freepik and Flaticon. The options are unlimited, from the Background remover, which works wonders in any image, to the Text-to-image generator, which conjures images out of thin air. Furthermore, the Photo editor and Brand kit options are simple to use and accessible. Last but not least, check out the Mobile app, which is available in both iOS and Android and allows you to carry your ideas with you everywhere you go.
  • Enjoy all the features of Wepik, free of cost! — Users of Wepik's platform can access all templates and functionality for free using the company's free platform. This makes it great for people on a tight budget who wish to build professional-looking themes. Furthermore, there is no need to download anything because Wepik is accessible immediately from the online browser and the mobile app.

Wepik pricing plans

The platform is one of the most affordable solutions available in the business. Wepik, like Canva, offers a free forever plan, however there are no premium subscriptions offered. It's worth noting that while using the free version of Wepik, users may access all templates and professional-like features by simply signing up.

PicMonkey - Overall best

Last but not the least, this alternative online design software like Canva is one that has been around for a very long time. I seem to remember it as one of the first graphic design tools that I tried out. It’s a great Canva alternative in the fact that it’s completely robust and has a ton of advanced features that I believe you will enjoy using.

Unlike Canva where you’re more likely to select a template from thousands of design choices, PicMonkey is where you’ll be more inclined to do everything from scratch. Yes, there are still some pretty good template choices, but the design tools and elements are better suited for doing everything yourself.

Let’s take a look at its best features:

  • The photo retoucher - The software takes cues from Photoshop by providing you with a powerful photo editing tool. The only difference is that it’s so much more beginner-friendly. It’s still advanced, and you can make great adjustments to your photos. But, its user interface is just simpler and less complicated.
  • Amazing draw tool - Much like Photoshop, you’ll be able to use it to draw directly on the app. It’s somewhat simpler, with more limited brush options. You can use it to hand-draw graphics, logos, and more. There are three brushes that you can use: pencil, paint, or spray paint.
  • Templates - I like how PicMonkey organizes its template options. It’s similar to Canva, where you can run a search according to the kind of material you want to create. There are thousands of options, and they’re all quite attractive. You’ll have a good selection of templates that you can customize to fit your branding needs.

PicMonkey pricing plans

When you’re using the mobile app, you can use it for completely free. It’s available on Google Playstore and the Apple App Store. There are limitations; as with any free forever plan. But it’s a great deal nonetheless.

You’ll also have your pick of three paid plans. The basic plan starts at $7.99 billed monthly. You could also save 25% if you choose an annual payment plan which will cost $72 upfront. The Pro plan offers a 7-day free trial. It costs $12.99 a month. You can save 23% by paying an upfront fee of $120 billed annually. And finally, the Business plan costs $23 a month. You’ll be able to save 17% with an annual subscription that costs $228.

Stencil - Best tool for quick graphics

Stencil is a great tool for anyone who doesn’t need top-notch visuals. It gets the job done and it gets it done quickly. Its whole premise revolves around adding text on top of an image. And for many businesses, that’s all they really need.

Think of it as a typography graphic tool. But instead of just creating images for Instagram, you get to choose from various sizes. You will be able to add a few basic elements like shapes and icons to your work. But other than that, you won’t be able to explore your creative boundaries much.

There are no animations or video background capabilities on the platform. Despite that, it’s a great tool if you need something in a snap, and don’t really need a lot of visual elements to add to your content.

One of its best features though is the ability to select a quote from its library. The software will then automatically add that quote to your image. You won’t need to do any editing work. So it’s great for last-minute inspirational posts.

Take a look at some of its best features:

  • Template library - There are over 650 templates to choose from. It includes sizes for creating Amazon shirt and Zazzle products graphics. It’s great for casual editors who don’t really need a lot of creative freedom.
  • Instagram/SMS - Each month you’ll be able to share your work via Instagram or SMS. There is a limit to it though, which is a bit annoying. You’ll only be able to send up to 100 Instagram/SMS shares a month depending on your plan.
  • Facebook Ad grid - this feature helps you check if your graphic has under 20% of text-to-image ratio. This is a great tool if you run Facebook ads since it can be difficult to get approved. Plus, the platform tends to be strict with violator ad accounts.

Stencil pricing plans

There are two billing options for this platform. You’ll be able to pay either on a monthly or annual basis. If you choose the yearly billing option, you’ll save 40% of the monthly fees. Now, there is a free plan which I suggest you look into first. It’s got great feature access.

However, you’re only able to save up to 10 photos each month on the free plan. It’s good enough if you’re not really going to use the platform too often.

Pricing starts at $9 a month. But if you want to have unlimited access to all of its features, you might want to subscribe to their Unlimited plan which costs $20 a month. Don’t worry though, all of their plans have a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Visme - Great for collaborative work

This Canva alternative is a top contender especially if you’re working collaboratively with a team. It’s the closest you’ll come to duplicating Canva’s user intuitiveness and powerful features. It allows you to create professional-looking infographics, proposals, presentations, and more.

It’s a great all-in-one tool for anyone who wants an easy-to-use graphics software. But before we go any further, let’s take a look at its best features:

  • Data visualization tools - there are over 40 customizable flowcharts, a table and interactive map builder, and data widgets to choose from. You’ll enjoy this feature if you like to create charts. One of its unique aspects is that you can import data from a spreadsheet. So you don’t have to manually input it. It saves you time, and it streamlines the entire process.
  • Template library - there are hundreds of templates to choose from at any given time. You can create animated posts, GIFs, videos, and even create printable multi-page documents. I quite like how the design options are attractive, and often well thought out. You won’t find random templates that look like not much thought was put into it so you don’t have to waste your time making several adjustments.
  • Infographics - On the platform, you’ll be able to create what they call infinitely vertical graphics. Unlike other platforms, you’ll have to constantly resize your file to make sure you have the right length. On Visme, you can simply drag the bottom bar to make it longer, saving you precious time. So you no longer have to keep resizing and restructuring your content just to make sure your canvas is long enough.
  • Collaborative tools - I mentioned that this tool is designed to make working with a team much, much easier. And I think you’ll appreciate being able to leave comments, notes, and make changes to graphics in a snap. It’s similar to how you would leave comments on Google Docs. I quite like the interface and how easy it is to run through all the notes.
  • Analytics tools for teams and enterprises - One of my favorite features of the software is the ability to generate leads and track views. This is applicable when you decide to publish any project with Visme as a host. It’s a great tool if you want to be able to track how well your graphics are doing.

Visme pricing plans

The software comes with a free plan that you can use for as long as you like. It’s a really nice thing to have especially if you’re not too sure whether you like the software or not yet. You’ll also have access to the following features:

  • Create up to five projects
  • 100 MB of storage
  • Limited template options
  • Download or save as a JPG file
  • Limited widgets and charts options
  • Public projects

I'd say that the free plan is definitely worth your time and effort. Think of it as an untimed free trial. You get to try out its best features and when you decide that you want more, you can choose to upgrade.

Other than that, you’ll have three paid plan options. You’ll have to choose between the usual monthly billing cycle or if you want to pay annually. Pricing starts at $15 which isn’t too bad when you think about it. But, you will face a few limitations concerning storage and the number of projects you can create.

Other than that, it’s a solid competitor that I think you’ll really enjoy the platform especially if you’re working with a team.

Snappa - Best for social media and blog graphics

This platform is a good option for the practical graphic designer. Its focus lies on helping you create social media and blog graphics. So you’re very limited when it comes to canvas sizes. You won’t be able to create business card designs, or document layouts.

I know it sounds like a big drawback, but really think about it for a second. Its focus on these two categories means you’ll be able to create stunning graphics without getting sidetracked. It also means you’ll have access to a suite of tools designed to perform a specific task flawlessly.

Let’s take a look at some of its best features:

  • Template library - Unlike Canva, it doesn’t have an overly large library. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the choices that I have with Canva. But if you’re someone who likes to be able to see nearly all of your options in one go, Snappa’s user interface is basically a dream come true. Of course, that’s not to say that you have limited choices on the platform. You’ll have a selection of over a thousand designs to choose from. It’s just that they’re not as extensive as its competitors.
  • Elements - You’ll enjoy the clutter-free editor with a clean and streamlined design. What’s more, you’ll still have access to elements such as shapes, photos, vectors, and a handful of shape options. Selected vectors are displayed as all-black. But you can always change the color to fit your styling needs.

Snappa pricing plans

Like others on this list, you’ll be able to use Snappa for free. You won’t have team collaboration ability, but you will have access to thousands of template options.

Now, if you opt for a paid plan it starts at $10 a month. It’s a fair price, but I think this platform is better suited for you if you want something simple that does a specific task.

Photoshop - Best for ultimate control

This software is the ideal tool for any graphic design savant. You’ll have access to both basic and advanced tools that will help you create any kind of graphic imaginable. From simple photo editing tasks like adjusting color preferences to creating professional visual aids fit for Fortune 500 companies, Adobe Photoshop is a platform known for letting you do it all.

And I have to be honest, it’s not for beginners who are not interested in spending a lot of time creating visually appealing content. And as with any advanced software, there is a significant learning curve that needs to be tackled.

I wouldn’t recommend it especially if you feel like you don’t have the time to learn everything that the software has to offer. Some spend months - at the very least, learning the basics of the entire program.

And you’ll usually have to spend at least a year mastering it too. So it will definitely be a large investment on your part.

Let’s take a look at what it can do for you:

  • Expert mockups - Adobe Photoshop is a great tool for creating professional-looking photoshops. Its tools for adding overlays and adjusting images allow you to create realistic mockups that your viewers wouldn’t look twice at.
  • Professional editing tools - Another great thing about the tool is that you’ll be able to perform advanced photo editing tricks. For example, you’ll be able to add yourself into any background imaginable. When done correctly, it will look like you didn’t edit it at all.
  • Collaborations - If you need to work with a team, you’ll be able to invite others to edit cloud documents. It’s easy, changes are saved almost instantly, and you’ll be able to review everything without a second thought.
  • Sync presets - Let’s say you have a couple of favorite brushes, gradients, and even color groups. The platform allows you to save them so you can easily locate them the next time you need them. Think of it as kind of similar to Canva’s brand kit, but with more robust functionality.
  • Drawing tools - If you have a flair for digitally drawing things, you can use existing brushes or import some of your own. Many graphic artists have created absolute works of art on the platform despite the Adobe illustrator’s popularity in the industry.

Photoshop pricing plans

A great thing about the platform is that it’s extremely flexible. But it does come with a price. Unfortunately, you can’t use it for free legally. You could give the free trial a whirl though, just so you can figure out if it works well for you, but prices start at $19.99 a month and that’s if you choose the annual prepaid plan which adds up to a yearly upfront payment of $239.88 a year.

If you’re looking forward to a yearly subscription because it’s MUCH cheaper but aren’t inclined to pay the upfront fee, you can opt for an annual subscription - billed by month, instead. It costs $20.99 a month.

And finally, if you want to subscribe on a month-to-month basis instead, it will cost $31.49 a month. It’s quite expensive, but when you think about the things you can do on the platform, and the possibilities that come with it, I’m sure you’ll be as excited as I am.

Crello - Best with mobile app

This platform is a powerful Canva alternative if not only for the fact that it also has a mobile application. Personally, I like Canva’s user interface more. It’s more streamlined and well-organized. But there is a certain allure to this software.

It’s easy to use, comes with several template options, and you can do it all on your phone. You’ll be able to create content for social media channels to more complicated marketing graphics.

Don’t get me wrong - it’s not as powerful as Photoshop, but it makes it easier for beginners to create attractive graphics the same way Canva does.

Even though the platforms are quite similar, the main difference is the kind of content you’ll be able to create. On Canva, you’ll have the tools required to create highly-professional visuals in a snap. Unfortunately, Crello is better-suited for fun and casual designs. But that only means it’s the right choice for you if you like to create more laid-back and fun graphics.

Let’s take a look at its best features:

  • Extensive template library - The platform has over 30,000 animated and regular premade designs for you to choose from. They range from simple to slightly more elegant designs. You might be worried that it’s too similar to what Canva offers. But both platforms source from different providers so you’ll have a good pick of unique content.
  • HD videos and animation - One of its advantages over its competition is that there are over 32,000 video clips and animations to choose from. You’re free to use them all, and it’s definitely a powerful resource.
  • Stock images - Crello is partnered with Depositphotos and allows you to have access to over 138 million stock content that you’re free to use for your graphics. It’s great if you don’t really have the need for or access to branded content.

Crello pricing plans

It comes with a free forever “starter plan”. It’s a great option for anyone who is just testing the waters and isn’t sure they want to commit to anything solid just yet. You’ll only be able to download five designs each month.

It’s also considerably cheaper compared to Canva. The premium plan starts at only $7.99 a month. You can check out the free trial first just to be sure, but the pro version gives you unlimited access to everything on the platform. Overall, it’s not a bad deal.

DesignCap

DesignCap lets you quickly and easily create eye-catching posters and flyers with its plethora of cool effects and display options. You can even compare your designs with those of other designers on the site, so you can learn from their work too.

DesignCap even lets you create animated GIFs so you can share your awesome creations on the web. It works on both Windows and Mac, so you can use it to make posters or flyers on your computer.

The tool doesn't carry any watermarks either, so you can be sure that your designs will be appreciated. It's a good choice for anyone who wants to make posters for a party, concert, or event.

DesignCap has a ton of awesome features, but here are some of our favorites:

  • Project editor with unlimited revisions and unlimited designs - DesignCap has an excellent project editor with which you can make unlimited revisions of your designs. It shows the differences between your old and new designs, so you’ll always know exactly what’s changed.
  • Massive template library - The software has a huge template library to choose from, so you can design a variety of posters and flyers and create a bunch of different designs at once. There are templates for almost any kind of project you can think of, so you’ll always find something that you like.
  • Online-based platform - It's an online-based platform that lets you design posters and flyers using your computer. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and even Android!

DesignCap pricing plans

The platform is one of the cheapest in the industry. Like Canva, it comes with a free forever plan. On the other hand, its paid plans range from $4.99 to $5.99 a month, depending on the plan you choose.

Canva competitors: which is the best one?

I won’t lie, I am partial to PicMonkey. The main reason is because it’s the closest tool you can get that is made for beginners that feels like Photoshop. It’s robust, easy to use, and there are a lot of elements and features to get you started. You’ll even be able to add videos and create animations on the tool. Plus, it has a handy mobile app as well that is slightly less buggy compared to Canva.

That said, you have a lot of really great choices on this list. Each of them are suited for different needs. So it really depends on what you need and how you want to go about it. I suggest taking a look at all of the choices and considering what you need and how well the tools would work for you before making a final decision.

Honorable shoutout to BeFunky. They have some really interesting tools that we've tested ourselves including a really cool watermark batch - They're more geared towards serious users, but a really powerful suite of tools available

Remember, if you choose a software with a paid subscription, you’ll be putting money into it.

And it wouldn’t be smart to test something out half-baked. Give the trials or free runs a run and see whether you’re comfortable with the tools all in all. The choice is yours.
