I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of the Canva free trial by now. Sure, the free version is okay. But when you start seeing the premium features, you’ll start to second-guess yourself.

But is it really the right choice?

In today’s post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to maximize your free trial.

If you've already decided to get Canva, just click the button below to try it for free.

What is Canva?

Canva is a free design tool that you can use to create various graphic design projects. You’ll be able to create animated, 3D, and 2D artwork on the platform. It’s primarily advertised towards beginners and design noobs. That said, it can be a powerful tool when used correctly.

What is Canva

It’s simple enough to use and when you’re on a paid subscription, you’ll be able to unlock more design possibilities. It’s a great tool for small businesses and entrepreneurs who want to take the design aspect of work into their own hands.

I personally use it to create graphics for my campaigns. Like I said, it’s powerful without the membership, but even more so with it.

Canva plans and pricing

I often get asked: is Canva free? And in all honesty, yes it’s free. You can create great graphics without paying. However, you’ll unlock better options and more convenient features when you proceed with a paid plan.

There are two billing options for you to choose from: annual and monthly. If you opt for annual billing, you’ll pay $119.99  on the other hand, if you want to take it one month at a time, you’ll be charged $12.99 every 30 days

There is also an Enterprise version. It’s a great choice if you have many people on your team. However, it is significantly more expensive. That said, if you have over 20 members on your team, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth. It’s $30 a month and gives you the ability to share your account with multiple team members.

Of course, that’s not to say that you won’t be able to share access on the regular plan. You can do this for a certain number of additional accounts.

Personally, I think you’ll get more value for your money with the annual billing option if you don’t work with a large team. It’s ultimately much more affordable compared to hiring someone to do the work for you. Plus, this way you get to be more active in your business operations

If you’re not 100% sure the pro version will be all that different from the free plan, you have the 30-day free trial to fall back on.

Canva free trial for 30 days

Before you choose to upgrade, the platform offers you the chance to try out all premium features free for a month. Obviously, this is a good chance for you to take the premium features on a test run. This will help you better visualize whether you need to subscribe to pro or not. That said, I definitely think you should subscribe especially if you plan to use it at least once a month, It’s an incredibly powerful tool, and you do not want to miss out.

That said, it can be easy to lose track of the days and get carried away with all the pro features. To help you make the most of your free trial, I’ve compiled a few suggestions below for you.

Let’s get started.

Explore your template options

Whatever industry you’re in, the templates library is definitely something you need to familiarize yourself with. I know, sometimes you just want to start from scratch. And you can most certainly do that, but you should take a close look at the premium template options to give you a rough idea of what you’re dealing with.

But before you do this, you should consider the type of graphics you plan on creating on the platform. Will you be using it to create a branding kit? Do you need it for social media posting? This will give you a clearer direction of what you need to look for.

I suggest asking yourself a few things while doing this:

Are these templates exactly what I need?

  Will they be useful?

Are they better than the ones that are free?

Try out the branding kit

I don’t know about you, but even after going through the hundreds of font choices readily available on the app, I felt like I needed to use some of my own just because it allows me to tailor my content specifically for my brand. Luckily, you’re able to upload as many fonts as you want.

Other than that, the brand kit also allows you to save several color palettes. This makes it easier to choose colors that coincide with your branding while creating your graphics so you don’t have to look for their hex codes manually.

You’ll also be able to save your logos here for easy access. It’s all really convenient. Give it a try for the first 30 days, and I guarantee you that you will never want to go back.

Take on a blank project

I know, there are thousands of templates to choose from. But you’ll never really truly understand how powerful Canva is until you try out the editor from scratch.

canva editor

Take the time to play around with all the features you’ll see on the editor. The resizing feature makes it easy for you to use the same design for another canvas without disrupting the elements too much.

I’ll get into more detail with the specific tools you’ll find in the editor. But basically, it’s best for you to just get into it and tackle all of the different aspects one by one to see if you need them or not. By the end of it, you’ll be more familiar with the editor and you’ll have a better grasp of how the pro features function.

Create one design a day

I know, it sounds like a lot of work. But even if you’re just playing around with a template, create and download at least one graphic each day. It doesn’t matter if you spend ten or fifty minutes with it. Just do it.

By the end of your trial, you’ll have a collection of graphics with pro features that you’ll have gotten for free.

Canva pro features

Now that you have an idea of what you should do, let’s take a look at the features that you’ll get with a pro subscription.

The brand kit

I mentioned the brand kit before. And I think you’ll love it, especially if you work with multiple businesses on a regular basis or if you create tailored content. This basically allows you to keep a consistent theme to all of your content without missing a beat because all of the information will be available on your editor when you start editing.

You can also share the brand kits with your team if you’re working with other people which makes the job much easier.

Magic resizing

This is one of my favorite features on the platform. I like to create social media graphics and turn them into stories. On the free plan, you’d have to do that manually. But with this, you can automatically copy and resize the file. In some cases, you don’t have to edit it anymore. But sometimes you have to make a few tweaks. It’s really easy and it’s usually just resizing a few of the elements and moving them around.

Unlimited design and photo folders

On the free plan, you’ll see all of your designs on a specific tab. You’re limited when it comes to folder creation as well. But if you’re like me, and you create graphics for a variety of clients and uses, additional folders are more than just slightly helpful.

This will help you segregate your work making them more accessible. It also means you’re not frantically scrolling through everything you’ve ever created just to find the right one.

Download designs with a transparent background

I like to create icons on occasion. And I find it helpful for downloading logos or elements I create that I’ll be re-using for other projects. On the free plan, you won’t be able to download transparent files. There will always be a white background. I find it helpful for anyone who uses PNGs with transparent backgrounds. Of course, you could run it through a background remover but that runs the risk of ruining the integrity and resolution of your design.

Delete backgrounds

Let’s say you want to add a photo of your product, but you’re not happy with its background. This tool allows you to delete the background of your photo seamlessly so you can use it as an element. Alternatively, you can also use it to delete the background of elements you created but didn’t download with a transparent background.

Animation tool

Whether you want to have a neon effect for your text or want them sweeping in from left to right, this feature adds an element of movement to your content. You’ll also be able to incorporate videos into your creations.

I’ve used it to create intros and outros for video segments before. You can just adjust the resolution so it’s high-quality and non-grainy.

Premium elements

While all the templates are technically free, you might not be able to download them if they use pro graphics. You could always substitute them, but it’s not always the same. One of the best things about the library is that it’s always getting updated. So you’re able to access new ones.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that the software might have a few discrepancies with tagging the elements. I’ve had experience searching for a specific element but it didn’t pop up. Then after scrolling the main directory, I found something that should have popped up on that search.

Team sharing and delegation

Now you’ll be able to delegate titles for your team members. And it’s also easier to share files without using a link. You can simply upload it into the team dashboard and it’s there for everyone permitted to access. It makes things less complicated and streamlines the entire team process.

Social media content scheduling

The content planner allows you to plan, design, and schedule visual content for your social media platforms directly on the app. You can integrate it with Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Pinterest for now. It’s convenient and just drives home the fact that Canva is a really powerful tool for anyone who uses these platforms to their advantage.

Other features

Aside from that, you’ll also have access to a plethora of other tools like:

  • Unlimited photo and asset storage
  • Image upload
  • Over 75 million premium stock videos, audio, photos, and graphics
  • Save team templates
  • Export designs as an animated GIF
  • Priority customer support

Cancelling the free trial

If you’re like me, and you sign up for free trials only to end up forgetting about canceling way down the road, then you’ll be happy to hear you can sign up for a free trial and cancel it at any time but still have the ability to use the pro features for the full period. You don’t have to pay for anything upfront, but you will be asked to input your card details, so you have to be careful not to forget canceling.

As long as you cancel within 30 days, you won’t be charged a single penny. You know, unless you decide to continue with your subscription. I highly recommend giving it a whirl if you’re looking for excellent graphic resources for your business for free.

How to unlock the free trial

Getting in on the free trial is really easy and uncomplicated. And don’t worry! If you’ve been using the platform for free for quite some time now, you’ll still be able to make use of it. But if you’re new to Canva, here’s what you need to do:

  • Step one: Click this link.
  • Step two: Create an account or log in.
  • Step three: Select the monthly or yearly subscription.
  • Step four: Enter your payment details.
  • Step five: Click the “claim my free trial” button

And that’s it! You should be good to go. If you’re using a card, you might get a verification payment bill, but it will get refunded right away. This is how the software tests for card authenticity and validity.

Now that you’re all set, make sure you remember to cancel your subscription before you get charged. Or don’t - if you want to keep moving forward.

Final words

Overall, I think you’ll fall in love with Canva Pro after the first few days. I know, I didn’t want to go back after that initial 30-day period. It was just way more convenient and the additional feature set just opened up so many new design possibilities for me.

Of course, the decision is ultimately yours. Just make sure you make the most of it so you don’t waste your time. Oh, and if you do decide to proceed, I recommend the annual billing option just because you get more value for it.
