Whether you’re in digital marketing, social media management, graphic design, or simply run a business, it’s no secret that convenient graphic software is in high demand. Canva has grown exponentially since it launched and has made rounds as one of the best free programs in the market.

But how is the Canva Pro pricing? Is it worth the upgrade?

Today, you’ll find out.

If you've already decided to get Canva, just click the button below to try it for free.

What is Canva?

I won’t lie, I’ve used this platform nearly every week since it launched. And I started out with a free plan. Generally, the features that come with it are substantial. You have plenty of choices, and you’re able to create eye-catching visuals with hundreds of templates to choose from.

What is Canva

But as my venture progressed, I decided to give the paid subscription a try. After all, I wanted to have access to more elements and features that I could not have otherwise unlocked without paying. And let me tell you this: it changed my life.

But no, seriously. You probably think I’m exaggerating right now. And I can’t exactly blame you for it. After all, there’s hundreds of similar software with glowing reviews out there like mine.

But unlike me, not all of them are honest. And if you’ve been with me for long enough, you’ll know that I don’t shy away from telling the truth. No matter how harsh it may seem.

With that said, Canva is a powerful tool you can use to create graphics of varying kinds. Its editor is still a bit simple, but it also works in favor of the program. You’ll enjoy access to millions of design templates for different uses.

Instagram posts, story posting, cards, invitations, presentations, ebooks, you name it. You can do virtually anything on the software. But it’s not without faults.

We’ll get to that later. But for now, all you need to know is that it’s a great tool for beginners and for anyone who is looking for a substantial design resource without paying a cent.

Canva Pro pricing plans

You will have two options when you sign up for an account. You can either upgrade to pro or remain on a free forever plan. If you’re not too sure yet, don’t worry. Play around with the editor and figure out whether you like the paid elements enough to actually pay for them.

Once you do decide to proceed with a Pro account, you’ll be able to choose between two billing options. You could either pay monthly or annually. Of course, you’ll get a discount if you opt for the yearly billing cycle, but you’re not missing out too much either if you want to take it one month at a time.

Generally, there’s no difference feature-wise when it comes to choosing which payment cycle you want. A monthly membership will cost you 12.95 a month while an annual subscription costs $9.95 a month which translates to $119 each year.

Overall, you get to save $36, which is a great deal. But it’s not too much of a loss especially if you’re just starting out. After all, you can always change your billing preference further down the road.

If you’re having trouble making the decision, let me help you out. But before that, I should mention that I immediately jumped into the annual membership. And only because I had already been on a free plan for months and I already knew the kind of revenue I could generate with a paid membership.

Now, let’s move on to helping you decide which billing cycle to choose.

I’d recommend you go this route if you’re someone who is just starting out. So generally, if your business is still new and you’re not generating much revenue from it yet. Or maybe if you’re sure you won’t be creating too many visuals in the coming year.

That way, you won’t have to go through a tedious process of requesting a refund when you decide to terminate your subscription before your paid year ends. $12.95 a month isn’t all that expensive either when you consider how powerful and useful the tool can be for your business.

If you’re looking at a big project or know that you will be able to make use of its premium features several times throughout the year, then you should definitely opt for annual billing. Not only does it save you money, but it also removes the inconvenience of having to think about getting billed each month.

Plus, $119 a year is a huge steal. I know several professional graphic designers who use the platform on a regular basis. It may not be as advanced as - say, Adobe Photoshop. But it’s more than capable of helping you complete simple to intermediate design tasks in a snap.

Is it worth my money?

The Canva pro cost is not at all that expensive. But to anyone who is paying for a service, it would only be logical to ask if it has a good return of investment. After all, nobody wants to just throw money away at something that won’t benefit them. It would be a huge waste of resources.

Canva - Is it worth my money

The platform claims to be an all-in-one tool for various graphic design work geared towards non-professional designers. Despite this claim, many experienced artists have found solace in the easy to use tool and thousands of templates you’ll find in its directory.

I like how you’ll be able to use it to create a variety of designs while learning in the process. Personally, I feel like even if you create just one design, it would already justify your monthly subscription.

The reason why I say this is because hiring a graphic designer can be expensive. And I’m not saying that they shouldn’t charge for what they’re worth. But not everyone can afford the cost that comes with it. This is especially true if you’re just starting out and have more than just a handful of designs you need right off the bat.

A single graphic for social media posting can easily cost $20 elsewhere. So even if you’re on the monthly plan, I’m fairly sure you’ll get your money’s worth either way.

The only drawback is that it’s inconvenient. You may not have the design skills to create a truly professional graphic. And in many ways, the template library can be somewhat limited especially if you aren’t too creative.

Having said that, I still think it’s worth its price.

What do I get with a membership?

The platform’s most prominent feature is its image editor. It’s easy to use, and simple enough that you won’t feel overwhelmed the first time you try to use it. But that isn’t to say that it’s too simple. It can be a powerful tool when used correctly.

With that, let’s take a closer look at each of its features so I can share my thoughts along with some tips I think you’ll find very helpful.

The editor

The image editor is where you’ll spend most of your time. This is basically where you’ll be able to make changes to customize your media and where you’ll be able to share it as well. It features a What You See Is What You Get interface so you can make changes real-time while viewing exactly how it will look like in the final product.

Some of the things you can do here is add more design elements and photos. You can choose those from the elements library, or stock photos, or upload your own. It’s all fairly easy to navigate so you shouldn’t get lost when working.

I suggest you start out with a template or a plan. Oh, and did I mention you can also easily switch between templates here? It’s a convenient feature that makes it easy to change your mind when the template you started working on doesn’t pan out.

I like how there are several design suggestions throughout the editor. For example, when you want to add a text, you’ll get a selection of preconstructed typefaces with varying styles and effects to get you started.

Top tip: Take your time to explore everything at your disposal. This will help you become more familiar with your tools so you don’t miss out on anything.

The extensive libraries

So there are several libraries you need to be aware of.

  • Elements
  • Templates
  • Stock photos
  • Shapes
  • Text

These are what you’ll be dealing with the most so make sure you explore everything there is to see. Doing this will help prevent getting overwhelmed by your choices. After all, there are millions of items to see on the Canva directories.

All libraries aside from shapes get updated consistently. So you will get more and more choices over time. It is easy to get lost, but the handy search bar will help you find the results that you’re looking for.

However, a kink to using the search feature that I found is that it doesn’t always display all the related results. One time I searched for hands but didn’t find anything that I liked. Then while I was scrolling the directory “home” I found an illustration of hands that wasn’t in the prior selections.

It might have something to do with the tags associated with the graphics, but it can be a little annoying nonetheless.

On the other hand, the template library is subdivided into several graphic types. For example, there are templates for Facebook banners, logos, animated social media posts, and business cards. This helps with organization. And I quite like how you’re able to search for certain themes without getting restricted to just one media type.

Take note that if you’re planning on selling your designs, you should be aware of Canva’s licensing guidelines so you don’t get in trouble moving forward.

Brand kit

Another feature I think you should explore is that brand kit. This is where you’ll be able to save your logo for easy access as well as a color palette that will be conveniently displayed each time you have a color selection open on the editor.

Canva Brand kit

You’ll also be able to add brand fonts here. And it works similarly to the color palette option. Basically, your fonts will appear when you’re adding a line of text to your design. You’ll also be able to upload your own fonts to Canva. You just need to import the .ttf files and you’re good to go.

If you work with several people, you’ll be delighted to know you can create teams that allow you to share information and designs. There is also the ability to work collaboratively which makes it easier to manage several projects at the same time and delegate them to the right people.

Plus, this is also an easy way to share your account with others. For example, you have a sibling that needs to do a bit of design work, instead of giving them your account, you can just invite them to your team.

The bottom line: is it worth it?

Canva is a truly powerful beginner and advanced tool for anyone who needs graphic design quickly. Its features are all optimized to help you create professional and high-quality media for virtually any use for a fraction of the price it would cost you to hire a professional.

It does have its drawbacks, and you will need to spend some time working on your projects yourself. So make sure you’re willing to do that before you go ahead with the paid membership. In any case, you should definitely give the free option a whirl.

And if you decide you need the premium features, proceed with a subscription. There’s no rush. And besides, you can create high-quality graphics of different kinds even on a free plan. You’ll still have access to great elements, stock photos, and templates so you won’t miss out on much unless you take a liking to the features you need to pay for.

That said, going pro is definitely worth your money. For less than $20 a month, you get a plethora of design possibilities. You can even design billboard ads on the platform! Just take it step by step and think about what you need.

Overall, Canva is something worth checking out even if you decide the premium tools aren’t for you. And even if you only create one graphic a month, I can comfortably say, you’re not wasting your resources at all.
