GetResponse vs ActiveCampaign: what are their main differences?
Every email marketing application out there offers nearly the same features. The same can be said for ActiveCampaign and GetResponse. What makes each service truly unique is their execution, interface, pricing, and additional services.
Take a quick look at what sets GetResponse apart from ActiveCampaign below.
Landing page builder
GetResponse comes with an easy to use landing page builder. Unfortunately, ActiveCampaign does not offer this service unless you subscribe to their Plus plan onwards so you’re limited to creating marketing campaigns, but have to rely on a third-party service to create your landing pages if you want to save money.
On that note, GetResponse comes with an autofunnels feature that guides you through ready-made templates to create effective, high-converting sales funnels.
Although it does make sense that ActiveCampaign doesn’t come with this feature since you can’t build sales funnels on the platform.
GetResponse also features an in-built webinar tool that allows you to host and promote webinars. This is another feature that ActiveCampaign unfortunately does not offer.
Automation map feature
ActiveCampaign offers the first and only automation tracking tool in the market. This tool lets you view all of your existing automations in one screen to see how your customer journey progresses. GetResponse does not have this feature.
ActiveCampaign has an SMS messaging feature that allows you to reach out and follow up with your customers through text messaging. This feature is ideal if you want to maintain an open line of communication with your customers and if you want to capitalize on the higher possibility of your messages being visible to your leads.
On the other hand, GetResponse does not offer this feature. You will need to integrate a third-party app if you want to be able to reach your mailing list through SMS.
Free trial period
Both tools offer a substantial free trial period. However, GetResponse has a slight edge since its free trial lasts 30 days in comparison to ActiveCampaign’s 14-day trial.
Machine learning tools
ActiveCampaign utilizes machine learning tools to give you adequate data to improve and adjust your campaigns for a higher conversion rating. This feature is not available on GetResponse.
Summary: ActiveCampaign and GetResponse cater to two different customer types. ActiveCampaign is a better choice for you if you’re focused on connecting with your customers through a variety of channels and are focused more on creating campaigns that keep you visible and present in your leads’ minds.
On the other hand, GetResponse is better suited for webinar creators or if you want to prioritize building sales funnels.
ActiveCampaign gives you complete control over your mailing list and gives you the option to reach your leads through SMS marketing instead of focusing solely on email marketing. Here are some other positive aspects of the platform:
GetResponse is better suited for professionals and email marketers who host webinars or don’t really have much use for other ways of reaching their leads other than emails. The autoresponder and autofunnels tool work seamlessly together to automate most of the tasks you need to accomplish on the platform as well.
While ActiveCampaign gives you a long list of features and benefits, there are also some key drawbacks that could be considered a deal-breaker.
GetResponse is better suited for professionals and businesses that rely heavily on sales funnels and email marketing. While the platform has been around since 1998, there are a few things that the company can improve upon to make it better.
As stated above, ActiveCampaign gives you access to a host of features that make it ideal for maximizing conversions and CRM. Take a look at its best features:
The site tracking tool
ActiveCampaign utilizes a site tracking tool that essentially tracks your customer’s activity on your website.
This allows you to send out targeted marketing strategies according to their store behavior to note their interests. The feature attaches your customer’s entire website behavior to their contact information so you can better determine the next course of action to take to make a conversion.
This feature allows you to alter the content of your email and tailor it specifically for certain customers.
For example, if you’re displaying best selling products or top recommendations, you can display products each customer has viewed previously to reinforce the conversion.
Easy to use campaign builder
The automation builder features an intuitive drag and drop tool represented in a flowchart. This allows you to see the progress of your campaign or automation more easily and so you can tailor it to fit your every need without having to check individual pages.
ActiveCampaign allows you to send out SMS marketing to your leads within the platform. This in-built feature lets you capitalize on the convenience and urgency of SMS instead of relying on emails that might go unopened.
Drag and drop builder
The ActiveCampaign drag and drop builder is streamlined to make it easier for you to identify your goals and tasks. This lets you focus on what you need to do rather than give you too many unnecessary options.
Free all-around customer service
Customer service is easy to reach and available through phone, email, and live chat at any time. They’re quick to respond, eager to please, and very helpful when it comes to meeting concerns.
Other ActiveCampaign features
Summary: Overall, ActiveCampaign gives you access to a host of features designed for businesses that focus on CRM, conversions, and lead follow-ups. Their lack of a landing page builder means the platform allows you to focus more on your existing subscriber base to work up your conversion rates.
As previously established, GetResponse is better suited for professionals and users who rely solely on email marketing. They do not offer follow-up options for your subscribers other than email marketing. Take a look at their features below.
Marketing automation tool
The marketing automation tool allows you to build workflows based on your customer’s journey. There are a set of autoresponder options that can be triggered by certain actions on the website.
This allows you to create personalized messages that can be triggered and sent to your customers based on what actions they take on your site. One-on-one responses are also available and GetResponse’s advanced segmentation tools give you the ability to separate your customers into specific groups which you can target specifically at any given time.
The landing page builder
Unlike ActiveCampaign, GetResponse features an in-built landing page builder for its cheapest plan. The user interface is good, however it has room for improvement.
Aside from that, the landing page builder is a great feature to have if you want to do more than just building email marketing campaigns.
The autofunnels feature streamlines the entire creative process for building your sales funnels.
This allows you to edit several pages at the same time so you can better visualize the flow of your sales funnel instead of focusing on one page at a time and having to constantly check with other pages if the flow is correct and cohesive.
GetResponse has a great analytics feature that is displayed in stages and sections. From your dashboard, you’ll be able to see a basic overview of your campaign statistics.
If you want a more detailed analytic report, you can head to the email analytics section where you’ll find graphs and charts portraying subscriber activity on your campaigns.
The webinar tool
The reason why I say GetResponse is ideal for professionals is their webinar tool. The integrated webinar feature allows you to host webinars for up to 500 attendees at a time.
This feature allows you to share presentations, polls, moderate chats, share desktop screens, manage your attendees, and it even has VoIP capabilities. There’s also an option to password-protect our webinar if you’re offering it as a paid service.
Other GetResponse features
Summary: There is a reason that GetResponse has stayed in business for so long without being discarded by its newer and more modern competition. Their features work and are high-value. Moreover, their webinar tools as well as autofunnels features may have a few kinks, but nothing so major that it would affect your goals.
ActiveCampaign pricing plans
ActiveCampaign offers four plan options starting at $9 a month. They have plans set for businesses with subscriber lists ranging from 1 up to over 100,000.
Their plans and pricing vary depending on the number of subscribers you plan to reach and if you reach a subscriber list of over 100,000 you will need to contact them for a customized plan.
I’ve based the pricing comparison for each plan below for a mailing list of 500 contacts. You can choose to be billed either monthly or yearly.
Take note, that you will end up saving more if you choose to be billed annually. Take a look at their plans and pricing details below.
The Lite plan starts at $9 a month if billed annually and $15 a month if billed monthly. It comes with the following features:
The Lite plan is better suited for startups who are still trying to build up their subscriber list. There aren’t many features listed. However, you can send an unlimited number of automations and newsletters to raise your conversions.
The Plus plan starts at $49 a month is billed annually and $70 a month if billed monthly. ActiveCampaign is currently offering a CRM sales automation feature with the plan for a limited time. It comes with all of the features you get in the Lite plan plus:
The Plus plan is ideal if you’re keen on building landing pages with your automations. The limited-time offer of the free CRM with sales automation is also a huge benefit if you’re able to catch it.
The Professional plan is ActiveCampaign’s most popular plan. It costs $129 a month if billed annually or $159 a month if billed monthly. Like the previous plan, ActiveCampaign is also including CRM with sales automation as a free feature for a limited time. It comes with all the previously mentioned features as well as:
The Professional plan is best suited for larger businesses or businesses that employ extensive customer retention and lead capture techniques.
The Enterprise plan costs $229 a month billed annually or $279 a month billed monthly. It is ActiveCampaign’s most advanced plan option and like previous plans, it comes with a limited-time offer of a free CRM with sales automation feature. It comes with all the features listed above plus the following:
The Enterprise plan is ideal if you’re running a multi-point business and need all tools at your disposal.
The dedicated account representative is helpful to have since it means you’re able to reach someone more easily if you have any questions or need help with your account.
GetResponse pricing plans
GetResponse offers plan options similar to ActiveCampaign. Their plans also rely on your exact subscriber list number to determine how much it will cost you and breaking through the threshold of 1,000 subscribers also means you will need to contact them to set up a custom pricing for their Max plan.
GetResponse also offers a custom pricing plan wherein you’re able to reach out to their dedicated sales team and customize a plan perfectly tailored for your business. You’re able to choose between monthly billing, annual billing or 24-month billing.
The annual billing saves you 18% off the monthly billing cost while the 24-month billing saves you 30%.
The pricing below is based on a mailing list of up to 1,000 subscribers. Take a closer look at what each of their plans offer below:
The basic plan starts at $10.50 per month if billed every 24 months, $12.30 a month if billed annually, and $15 a month if billed monthly. It allows you to send emails and build a contact based with high engagement. Take a look at what comes with the basic plan:
Unlike ActiveCampaign, GetResponse offers some of its best features from the cheapest plan available. The basic plan is best if you’re focused on creating automated campaigns and are only looking to build your customer list up.
GetResponse’s Plus plan starts at $34.3 each month billed every 24 months, $43.12 each month billed annually, or $49 each month billed monthly. This plan comes with everything included in the Basic plan plus:
The Plus plan is GetResponse’s most popular plan. It’s ideal if you want to generate leads, sell products, and grow your sales. It also introduces the webinar feature with a maximum of 100 attendees.
The Professional plan starts at $69.3 a month for a 24-month billing period, $87.12 a month for annual billing, or $99 a month for monthly billing.
It comes with all the features in previously mentioned plans plus:
The Professional plan is best suited for sales funnel marketers and professionals who frequently use webinars.
The Max plan is customized to fit the volume your brand or business needs. The pricing is customized depending on your mailing list and it includes everything from previous plans as well as:
The Max plan is best suited for you if you need more room for webinar attendees and if you want to capitalize on your mailing list with the best features GetResponse has to offer.
Which platform should I choose?
Both GetResponse and ActiveCampaign are good choices when it comes to targeting your leads and performing certain functions within the platform. Just like any other option out there, you can’t expect it to be 100% perfect so there are definitely drawbacks.
For example, GetResponse is more high-value compared to ActiveCampaign. However, ActiveCampaign is better suited if you prioritize lead targeting. On the other hand, GetResponse is better if you like to host webinars and create sales funnels.
Overall, the choice boils down to which platform would be the most useful for you. If you want to be able to connect with your mailing list through more than just emails, ActiveCampaign’s SMS feature will be highly beneficial for you.
However, if you like to host webinars or create sales funnels for your business, GetResponse is your best choice.
