Authoring The Wolf Of Wall Street was a significant factor in his rise to worldwide prominence. During his trial in 1999, the defendant admitted to further offenses such as wire fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, and stock market manipulation.

If so, let me refresh your memory: Jordan was a stockbroker who amassed millions of dollars by defrauding individuals of their hard-earned savings via stock manipulation. 

He was convicted and did jail time for his crimes. But exactly how did Jordan end up being convicted? 

Jordan Belfort's early life

On July 9, 1962, Jordan Belfort was born in Bayside, Queens. He grew up in a Jewish family and went to high school with his best friend.

They would often spend their summers on the beach on Long Island selling Italian ice out of coolers. This is where they started as salesmen, though they didn't think of it that way at the time. 

It was just something they did to make some extra cash.

They also sold sub sandwiches during lunch breaks at school—and again, neither of these ventures were planned or organized—they just happened because they saw an opportunity and took it.

After graduating from American University with a degree in biology, Jordan enrolled in dental school at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.

He only lasted one day before dropping out because a faculty member told him that being a dentist wasn't really how you made money—it was what you did after you made your money that mattered!

Jordan Belfort's career

Belfort sought a door-to-door selling profession after dropping out of dentistry. He delivered meat and fish door-to-door in Long Island, New York. 

I've heard that this specific enterprise was incredibly successful. He even managed to extend it to the point where he had many individuals working for him. 

It became an enterprise that sold 5,000 pounds of beef and fish each week. However, he declared bankruptcy at the age of 25 and started working as a stockbroker trainee at L.F. Rothschild

His first boss apparently told him that masturbation, cocaine, and prostitutes were the keys to his professional success. He was sacked from his former employment due to the 1987 Black Monday stock market crisis

While the loss was disappointing, it did not dissuade Belfort from his drive to earn as much money as the more experienced stockbrokers.

In the 1980s, Belfort worked at many financial firms, soaking up as much knowledge as possible. In 1989, after perfecting his plan, he decided to go it alone.

After Belfort's brokerage business entered bankruptcy, he decided to form a new investment firm called Stratton Oakmont.

This episode occurred two years after the L.F. Rothschild incident. If Jordan Belfort's life story teaches us anything, it is that he never gave up even though the odds were stacked against him.

Belfort founded Stratton Oakmont in the early 1990s. The company offers penny stocks in a boiler room.

Belfort utilized a pump and dumped approach to deceive his investors. During the height of Stratton Oakmont's success, Belfort employed over 1,000 stockbrokers and managed more than $1 billion in assets

Belfort's brokers would attempt to sell shares to customers who were uninformed of the program as part of the scam.

The Quaalude was his go-to drug of choice. He was completely reliant on them at this time.

Accidents on the road were only one of many issues he created for himself by consuming narcotics

His boat sank on one of his ponds, and his helicopter crashed on his property. Belfort was widely known for encouraging his subordinates to act irrationally as a matter of business policy. 

There was a prevalent culture of drug addiction, sexual activity, and amusing horseplay at Stratton Oakmont's New York and Long Island offices.

One of the many weird accusations we've heard is that an employee at the business reportedly turned down a $5,000 offer from some of the company's traders in return for allowing them to shave her head

The employees were told to follow the motto, "Don't hang up until the consumer buys or dies."

Jordan Belfort's troubles with the law

Stratton Oakmont's dubious business methods were exposed in 1992. Following a settlement with the SEC, Belfort was forced to resign from his position and was later forbidden from operating in the stock market.

Belfort was barred from working in the securities business under the agreement terms.

The firm was forced to pay a financial penalty as a consequence. In 1997, a court issued an order requiring the corporation to be liquidated and all penalties to be paid. 

Belfort pled guilty to securities fraud and money laundering charges in 2003 and was sentenced to four years in jail and a $110 million fine.

He was only imprisoned for 22 months, but during that time, he developed a love of writing. That was when Leonardo DiCaprio portrays Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, it is a film that depicts the narrative of a Wall Street financier.

Belfort's opulent lifestyle and many parties were well known throughout his tenure at Stratton. Sometimes known as quaaludes, methaqualone was yet another substance he used recreationally.

Denise Lombardo and Belfort divorced when he was CEO of Stratton Oakmont. Their wedding occurred between 1985 and 1991.

The novel "The Wolf of Wall Street" by Jordan Belfort was inspired by Tommy Chong, his jailmate and inspiration.

He married the British-born model Nadine Caridi in 1991. They connected at a party and had 2 children named Chandler and Carter.

In 2005, she accused him of domestic violence (which may have aggravated his drug use), which led to their divorce in 2006.

He bought a yacht boat named Nadine, originally built for Coco Chanel in 1961, and is one of Belfort's latest buys. He opted to name the yacht after his second wife upon their marriage. 

But the ship sunk off the coast of Sardinia in June 1996. The Special Forces of the Italian Navy saved the crew left on the ship.

Belfort stated that he disobeyed the ship's captain's orders and proceeded to sail the vessel despite the heavy winds in the event's wake.

Anne Koppe and Belfort started dating in 1988. Since they announced their engagement in 2015, their relationship has continued strong. They are still dating as of 2020; however, they have not yet wed.

The notorious Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff is frequently likened to the Wall Street con artist Jordan Belfort.

Jordan Belfort's former security chief, Bo Dietl, said that he had never seen Belfort sober while working for him and that Belfort had strong links to the Mafia. In an interview, Dietl expressed his thoughts.

But when I step back and look at my life, I realize: that these aren't true stories at all. They're just stories—they aren't real, and they don't have to hold me back anymore. In fact, the only thing holding me back is myself!

This quote made me believe that I needed to change the tale I was telling myself. A better story. A more positive one.

But now I realize that it's not about the story itself—it's about your relationship with the story.

If you choose to believe the story that says, "I'm not good enough," then that's what you're going to feel like and do. But if you choose to believe the story that says, "I am good enough," you'll start acting like it and becoming it!

So stop telling yourself stories that make you feel bad about yourself! Start telling yourself stories that make you feel great about yourself! And watch what happens when you do!

"I want you to back yourself into a corner. Give yourself no choice but to succeed. Let the consequences of failure become so dire and unthinkable that you'll have no choice but to do whatever it takes to succeed."

I think it's helpful to have a "back yourself into a corner" mindset when you're setting out to achieve something. But I don't think it's wise to let failure be such a big deal that you're paralyzed by fear and unable to take the first step (for example).

Failure is inevitable—and in fact, it's necessary for growth. You won't learn anything new if you never fail at anything! 

So, don't allow the repercussions of failure to be so dreadful and unfathomable that you'll feel compelled to go to any length to achieve it

Instead, make sure that they're just dire enough to motivate you to get to your goal, but not so dire as to paralyze you with fear before you even start.

"If you give people a good enough 'why,' they will always figure out the 'how.'"

I think it's because it's so applicable to how we live our lives. When we're motivated by something that matters to us, we can accomplish anything

We may not have the skills to do it yet, but we'll figure out how if we know why this thing matters and is important.

I personally love this quote because I've seen it happen in my own life.

I've done things that at first seemed impossible—like starting a new business or writing a book—but when I got clear on why they mattered and what they meant to me, then suddenly, all of these resources appeared:

people who were willing to help me who hadn't been before; new ideas that allowed me to move forward more easily; even some kind of magic force that made everything fall into place just perfect for me!

This quote reminds me that if I want something badly enough and know why it's important enough for me, then I can make anything happen.

"You do not want to try to resolve their pain at this point. In fact, if anything, you want to amplify that pain."

I'm not sure how I feel about this quote. On the one hand, I suppose it's true that people in pain are often not thinking clearly, and their judgment may be affected by their emotional state. 

On the other hand, I think that amplifying their pain could be counter-productive if it leads to a snowball effect—people who feel bad about themselves tend to make bad choices and perpetuate their negative feelings.
