Online courses have become increasingly popular as a way to supplement or replace in-person education. However, before signing up for an online course, it can be challenging to discern which one would be most beneficial for you. Here's a comparison of two popular sites offering online courses: Kartra and Teachable.

Teachable is a newer company that offers both video and text-based learning options with no upfront cost. They offer classes on topics ranging from coding to personal finance and everything in between.

Meanwhile, Kartra offers classes on HTML and CSS, web design and development in general, and even a free class that teaches you to build an eCommerce store.

Of the two main options for creating online courses, Kartra and Teachable, which is the better choice? Come find out in this detailed Kartra vs Teachable comparison.

If you've already decided to buy Kartra or Teachable, just click the buttons below to grab it for free.

Kartra: what is it?

Kartra is an online platform that allows you to create and sell your own "online university" (as they refer to it) without any technical knowledge. It includes a large library of templates, easy-to-follow video tutorials, and easy-to-use scheduling tools that can make anyone's course available for purchase in one to two hours.

Their courses can be on virtually any subject, though professional development courses are especially popular.

I like how they are making the process of creating and selling an online course easy. Not to mention, you can use it to launch a full-scale e-commerce business in any niche you'd like.

One of Kartra's biggest selling points is that it helps you promote your courses through the use of pre-built sales funnels, social media connections and email campaigns.

Who is it for?

This platform is ideal for anyone looking to create an online course and become an e-learning entrepreneur. It's easy to use and allows you to create courses on virtually any topic, making it good for both professionals who want to monetize their skills or entrepreneurs who want to build up a digital product business. It's also great for people who want to improve their skills.

Teachable: what is it?

Teachable allows you to create your own online course and then sell it to the public. Similar to Kartra, this platform provides easy-to-use tools that allow anyone with no technical experience to create a top-notch product in no time at all. They have courses on virtually any subject, from coding and personal finance to career development and cooking.

Teachable's big selling point is that they offer complete hosting so you never have to worry about where to store your course or set up servers in order to make your products available. They also offer email management tools, analytics, and a learning platform that integrates with all major learning management systems (LMSs).

Who is it for?

Teachable is another ideal option for both entrepreneurs and professionals who are looking to create online courses. It offers more structure than Kartra does without being difficult to use. It's also a good option for those looking for a complete solution for hosting, with tools that allow you to create courses on virtually any topic.

It's a good idea for anyone looking for an easy way to create an online course and grow their business. It's especially great for entrepreneurs who want to take their business from the ground up (literally).

Basically, it's the perfect choice for you if you're looking for a beginner's alternative to Kartra - which is a bit more complex.

Teachable vs Kartra features: side-by-side comparison

Now that you know more about both platforms, it's a good idea to think about what they have to offer. Below, we'll compare some of the features that both Kartra and Teachable are known for as well as the ones they have similar to help you make a more informed decision before choosing the platform you want.

Landing page builder

Kartra has a landing page builder that can help you easily sell your courses (and make some money). When designing a course, Kartra allows you to use their template library to create an attractive landing page with one-click editing. You can also link your course to payment gateways such as PayPal or Stripe.

With Teachable's landing page builder, you can use the same tools to create a visually appealing website. You can add text and images, as well as accept payment via PayPal.

Teachable also supports multiple payment gateways so you can offer the same course on various platforms.

Kartra offers a simple landing page builder that allows you to quickly and easily sell your courses. However, Teachable offers more options for payment gateways and supports multiple currencies.

I like how Kartra allows you to create a landing page for your course with one-click editing (no technical know-how required). I also love the fact that you can accept payment via Stripe and PayPal, which is important.

Of course, Teachable's landing page builder is also easy to use, but it only allows you to accept payments through PayPal and select payment gateways (if you pay extra).

The verdict: Overall, I think Kartra has more to offer when it comes to building landing pages. However, it may seem a bit more complex or tricky to use if you're not used to creating landing pages. If you want something that's quicker, then Teachable may be a good choice for you.

Visual editor

Kartra's visual editor allows you to easily create and edit your course without the need for technical expertise. All a designer needs is their own creativity to create their course.

Teachable, on the other hand, has a visually appealing editor that can help you build a visually appealing, professional academy. It also features integrated videos so you can add some tutorial clips that will help your audience learn more about what you're teaching them. It allows you to add text as well as images and also accept payments via PayPal.

For those of you who prefer a more visual approach, Teachable may be the perfect choice for you. Kartra offers a simple editor that can help your creative side shine. For those of you who don't have artistic talent, it's good to know that Teachable can also offer more options for text and images, especially if you pay extra.

The verdict: Kartra's visual editor is great and allows you to create professional courses. However, it's not ideal for those who don't have creative talent. If you'd like to get creative, Teachable may be the better choice for you.

Landing page templates

When you create a course on Kartra, you can utilize the templates to make things easier. These templates can include banners, images, buttons and testimonials.

teachable web

Teachable also has a collection of free templates that you can use to promote your course. These include banners, images, video player and call to action buttons. You can also link your course to multiple payment gateways for easy monetization.

Kartra's template library is by far superior when it comes to selecting custom designs for your course. However, Teachable has more options when it comes to payment gateways.

The verdict: Overall, Teachable's landing page templates are pretty good, but I like the fact that Kartra can include an image gallery for your course with images and testimonials. Simply put, Kartra's templates are more advanced and offer better flexibility when it comes to customizing it to fit your brand.

Sales funnel templates

This is where Kartra shines. You can create a sales funnel and promote your course using these templates. They offer various types of funnel templates that you can use to generate more leads. These include boxes, image galleries, testimonials and call to action.

I like how Kartra offers a wide range of sales funnel templates that you can use to promote your course. You can also set up a webinar on your landing page and grow your audience with ease.

In addition, you can send your leads to a thank-you page where they can sign up for your course. You can also attach the Kartra plugin to other platforms such as Facebook and WordPress so that it's easier for your audience to access the sales funnel.

On the other hand, Teachable doesn't carry sales funnel functionality. Yes, you can manually create your own funnels, but it's impossible to do so right on the platform. That said, Kartra's sales funnel templates are more advanced and allow for easy promotion of your courses.

The verdict: If you need a sales funnel, then Kartra is a better choice. Teachable doesn't offer any sales funnels, but that's not necessarily a con because this feature isn't nearly as important as the others if you have a solid following already in place.

Mobile responsiveness

Both platforms look great on mobile devices, but Kartra has more features when it comes to viewing your courses on mobile. For instance, Kartra includes various features that you can use to customize your course and make it easier for people to watch. They also have a responsive navigation menu so that you can view additional content from the same landing page.

Teachable's courses are mostly responsive and easy to navigate with most mobile devices. However, there are some issues with the navigation menu that can be problematic for some users. For instance, they convert the navigation menu into a drop-down menu. In addition, you won't be able to add responsive videos or text blocks like you can with Kartra.

The verdict: Overall, Kartra wins this category because of their user-friendly navigation and interactive features that you can use to make it easier for people to view your course on their mobile devices.

A/B split testing

When you create a course on Kartra, you can test the conversion rate of your different marketing channels. You can then use this data to optimize your sales funnel and course. This can help you generate more leads and grow your audience.

kartra conversion

Teachable also offers this feature. In fact, their split-testing tool is much easier to use. However, it's more basic compared to Kartra's more advanced split testing tool. This can either be a positive or negative fact for you depending on what you're looking for.

Overall, both platforms offer reliable A/B testing features that can help you generate more leads. However, I prefer Teachable because it's easier to use than Kartra's split testing tool. The bottom line is that if you're looking for a reliable way to split test your marketing strategies, then Teachable is the way to go.

The verdict: If you're looking for a reliable A/B split testing feature, Teachable wins this category for its easier to use tool. However, if you want something more advanced and accurate, Karta is the way to go.

Social sharing features

There are two ways that you can connect with your audience on Teachable. One is by embedding social media buttons in your courses so that people can easily share your course with their networks. You can also utilize other social sharing features like Facebook Live, YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn. The other way is by adding a chat feature to your course so that students can contact you directly in real time.

Teachable's platform is well-known for its great features when it comes to sharing your courses with your audience on social media platforms. However, I found the chat feature to be more convenient depending on the subject of my course. In addition, Teachable offers a better "Live Video" experience compared to Kartra.

Kartra is well-known for its live video feature. However, I found the platform to be less intuitive when it came to connecting with your audience via social media. You can share your course on platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. However, I found their features to be less advanced compared to Teachable's social sharing features.

The verdict: If you're looking for a platform where you can connect with your students in real time via Facebook Live or a chat feature, then Teachable is the way to go.

Funnel builder

A funnel builder tool is what you need to promote your course and generate leads. A funnel builder allows you to create a series of steps that your audience will go through when signing up for your course. It's very similar to the sales funnel templates mentioned earlier in this review, but the purpose is different.

teachable main

This feature can be extremely useful if you want to create tiered pricing plans or give away certain bonuses only when people purchase a certain package. Like I said before, Teachable doesn't have sales funnel functionality, so here we're going to focus on what Kartra has to offer.

With Kartra's funnel builder, you can create unlimited campaigns with unlimited steps. This tool allows you to add up to 20 steps to your campaign to help convert your audience. You can choose from a variety of different templates that allow you to quickly and easily create a sales funnel for your course:

What's more is that the funnel builder allows for tracking which pages people convert on. You'll also be able to see how many viewers drop off at each step of the campaign. All of the tracking data that's available through the funnel builder is incredibly helpful when it comes to optimizing your sales funnel.

The verdict: Overall, Kartra wins this category because you'll have more customization options and ability to create a targeted sales funnel for your courses with their platform.

Affiliate tracking software

Another useful feature that you'll want to check out is their affiliate tracking software. You can use this software to track which people are linking to your course and where they're coming from. This allows you to see where your traffic is going and where it's coming from so that you can optimize your marketing efforts accordingly.

Both Kartra and Teachable allow you to track your affiliate's performance. It's no secret that affiliate tracking is extremely important if you want to maximize your revenue. However, I found Kartra's affiliate tracking to be more advanced and intuitive than Teachable's affiliate tracking tool.

The verdict: Kartra wins this category because of its more intuitive affiliate tracking tool. In addition, it offers a better user experience when it comes to importing affiliate links into the platform. The bottom line is that if you're looking for an advanced way to track affiliate performance and optimize your sales funnel, then Kartra is the way to go.

Membership sites

When you're marketing your course on the web, the last thing you want is to run into copyright issues with your content. This is why you need to create a membership site that contains all of your content. This way, you can legally provide access to different pieces of content in exchange for money as a solution to the free information that's readily available online.

website builder

Teachable makes it easy and convenient to create effective membership sites. Basically, it works by protecting your content with a username and password so that only paying customers can access the material. In addition, you can choose from various membership plans so that you can offer varying levels of content in exchange for money. The prices vary depending on the package that you're choosing, but all of the plans are affordable and simple to use.

Kartra allows you to create a membership site much more easily than Teachable. However, I found the platform to be more intuitive when it came to finding and using templates for your membership site.

The verdict: You'll find that Teachable is more intuitive when it comes to creating a membership site.

What's the point of investing in a platform if you can't count on them when you need support? I found that both Teachable and Kartra offer great customer service teams that go above and beyond to help their users. I never encountered any problems with the customer service teams on either platform.

However, I found Kartra to be more efficient when it came to delivering timely solutions to my courses that were experiencing issues.

You'll find that both platforms have similar ways of handling support tickets. Basically, you'll be able to submit a support ticket and get a response from the customer service team sometimes within minutes. The customer service team will try and help you resolve the issue as fast as possible, but don't expect serious customization with your account on either platform.

There are no personalization options or functionality that allows you to customize your dashboard in any way.

When it comes to canceling your subscription to these platforms, both of them have great handling of cancellations. In both platforms, the customer service team will help you cancel your subscription immediately, no questions asked. Granted, the cancellation will take up to two business days to process, but I never had any issue with either platform when canceling my subscriptions.

The verdict: Usually I'd side with Teachable when it comes to support and customer service, but Kartra's team kicked Teachable's team's butt when it came to canceling my subscriptions. The bottom line is that you can count on both of these platforms for quick and helpful assistance.

Website builder

Both platforms allow you to build complete websites directly on their servers. However, I found that Kartra was a bit more intuitive when it came to designing my website. Also, when you're building your site on Teachable, you have complete control over the files and plugins that are on their servers.

However, I found Teachable website builder to be incredibly easy to use and intuitive. Basically, you'll be able to choose from various marketing templates in order to create an effective sales funnel for your course that has a clean and modern design. In addition, you can easily customize your website to fit the needs of your course.

On the other hand, I found Kartra's website builder to be more intuitive when it came to adding content and images to my site. In addition, they have an impressive library of content that you can use on your site. However, my only complaint is that I found it difficult to find certain templates in the library. You'll just have to browse around until you find the one that's right for you.

The verdict: I found Teachable to be easier to use when it comes to building a website for your course.

Last but not the least, compare the two platforms when it comes to pricing. As I mentioned earlier, Kartra is definitely more expensive than Teachable. However, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. For example, some of the more advanced features, such as payments and automation, require you to pay a bit more for these features.

kartra pricing

I found Teachable to be a great option for beginners who are looking to make a profit out of their courses. This is because you can sell your courses on the platform with very simple pricing. As an example, below is what it would cost you per month if you're selling a course for Kartra's pricing that starts at $99 a month whereas Teachable starts at $39 a month. It's a wide gap between both options, but there are some features that make up for the cost.

The verdict: Both platforms have their pros and cons, but it comes down to how much money you're willing to spend and what you're looking for in a platform. If you're planning on selling your course for around $100, go with Teachable. However, if you want advanced functionality, I'd suggest going with Kartra.

Kartra pros and cons

Below, I've listed some of the advantages to using Kartra:

  • The course creator is incredibly intuitive and easy to use.
  • You get access to some advanced features, such as payments and automation.
  • You get access to a library of content that you can use on your site including eBooks and videos.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides to using the tool:

  • It's quite expensive
  • There is a significant learning curve for beginners

Teachable pros and cons

Teachable has its positive points such as:

  • You can easily go from zero to earning more than $2,000 per month
  • It's simpler and easier to use
  • It's cheaper

On the other hand, it also has quite a few drawbacks:

  • The platform is quite simple and doesn't have as much functionality as Kartra
  • It doesn't support sales funnels

I've been using Kartra to build my membership sites for the past year and it's been a great tool for me. However, you'll find that Teachable is more suited for beginners because of its simplicity and its cheaper pricing.

Teachable is simple, easy to use and plenty powerful enough to build your course sales pages with. Its focus is on making it quick and simple to set up your sales pages in a matter of minutes. Overall, it all depends on what you’re looking for.

Either way, I suggest taking a closer look at both of the platforms before making your decision.
