Running a YouTube channel isn’t easy. Your content can get lost, and unless you’re lucky and able to immediately find your people, chances are you'll spend another year or two trying to gain subscribers and viewers.

In this VidIQ review, I’m going to walk you through the benefits of using this view-boosting software.

Does it work? Is it worth your money?

Let’s dig in.

If you've already decided to get VidIQ, just click the button below to try it for free.

What is VidIQ?

The software is a YouTube certified platform that allows you to grow your channel for free. So basically, what it does is help creators find topics and keywords that they can use as content. It’s designed as an extension for Chrome and comes with a set of SEO features dedicated to helping you gain a leg up from your competition on YouTube.

VidIQ home

This includes being able to create titles, tags, and descriptions that are SEO and keyword optimized so you don’t have to worry about doing the research and fitting them in yourself. Think of it as a free resource for helping you develop the right content strategy that will help you scale your channel more quickly.

Keep in mind that while it does have a free forever plan, you have the option to upgrade to its premium or pro features. I’ll get into more detail later, but it’s a good thing to know before we continue.

Using VidIQ

The analytics software is marketed towards anyone who manages YouTube channels. So whether you’re planning on using it for yourself or for your clients in your agency, it’s definitely going to help you gain an advantage. You might be well aware of the basic platform strategies. That said, it’s still quite difficult to get it right the first time. Don’t even get me started on trying to figure out content - it’s both frustrating and mentally draining.

That said, it’s never a good idea to pour all of your resources into a single activity. And researching content ideas, the right competitive tags, and keywords to use can take a very long time. The time you could use to focus on creating your content and marketing your channel instead.

Furthermore, it comes with an analytics tool so you can more easily track how your content is performing.

So, how do you use it? Let me walk you through using the software.

Step one: connect your account

To get the ball rolling, you need to connect your YouTube channel. The first thing you’ll notice is that you’ll see all of your videos on the dashboard. This is basically where you’ll be able to see all the information regarding your videos from views, interactions, shares, and other insights that are essential in tracking your progress.

VidIQ Review connect your account

I like how everything is easy to organize according to your needs. Basically, you’ll be able to choose which stats you want displayed and in what order you want them displayed. The whole idea behind keeping everything in a single list is that it gives you easier access.

And the same is true for making quick changes. You can see all aspects of your video on the list and you can make changes right here as well. This includes updates you want to make for the descriptions, titles, tags, and more.

This comes in really handy when you already have a handful of content, and want to optimize them all more easily.

Step two: optimize

Now that you can see all of your videos in one place, it’s time for you to make use of VidIQ’s many tools that can help you boost your views. One of my favorite tools is the tag suggestion feature. What it does is show you suggestions on the right tags you should use for your video. This makes it easier to build your tags right from the list.

I recommend using up all 50 tags. Of course, you’ll have to start with typing out a few keywords. Once you’ve gotten the first few characters down, you’ll see your top choices. I don’t recommend running through all the same tags. Pick and choose variations for at least five different ones for the best results.

If you have the Chrome extension installed, you can use it to view tags on any YouTube video that you normally wouldn’t see. It’s a really cool hack to find tags that top-performing videos are using. But more than that, the tool also shows you the traffic sources you can use to improve your reach.

There are several tools and features you need to explore on the software. Make sure you take the time to go through them all to get the most out of it.

VidIQ Features

The software uses a combination of different tools that work together to give you the best insights, suggestions, and more to help you reach YouTube fame. Let’s take a quick look at all of the features and how you can use them to your advantage below.

Scorecard

With this tool, you are able to easily access YouTube Analytics data. Think of it as a summary of how well your videos are performing. Except, instead of an information-saturated sheet, it’s all arranged in an attractive and easy-to-understand manner. If you’re one of those people who have a hard time looking at sheets of data, then you’ll find this tool extremely helpful.

VidIQ Scorecard

What I like most about it is that you’re able to see color-coded data that shows you which is working, and which isn’t. This means it’s easier for you to identify what you need to improve upon, and how you should move forward with your content and how you optimize it.

The Scorecard is divided up into different sections. Each of them showing you an in-depth view of all your stats including social engagements, SEO, video optimization, controversial keywords, channel analytics, tags, suggested tags, channel tags, performance history, tweets, and trending videos.

Keyword tools

This is basically where you’ll be able to gain insight into trending content ideas, keywords you need to use, and competitor keyword information. You’ll basically be able to see all the suggested keywords for your channel and more. It’s a really handy tool not just for optimizing your descriptions and titles, but it’s also really great for days when you’re running out of ideas.

VidIQ Keyword tools

You can just create content based on top-performing keywords. It’s a lot easier than scrolling around YouTube trying to outrank your largest competitors. Each keyword is rated with a “score” that shows you an analysis of how well the word is performing. I like how the rating system goes by search volume instead of competitor information. This will help you become more visible to people who are actively looking for the kind of content you’re making instead of just stumbling upon you while they’re watching other channels.

This section is split up into multiple smaller, more specific tools. Let me walk you through them all one by one.

Inspector

One of the best things about the software is that it not only gives you the answer to your problems, but it also gives you the entire solution. What I mean about this is that you’ll also get an idea of everything surrounding a root keyword. Basically, you’ll get an ID of its score, related videos (to inspire you), and general audience interest over time.

Inline

When you enable this tool, you’ll be able to see which tags competitors are using. You’ll then be able to copy them and use them to create content that is likely to perform better. You can even select a few that you think would be relevant to your channel.

Translator

You’ll be able to access the in-built translation tool that helps you cater to a global audience. The way this works is that you’ll be able to translate your title, keyword tags, and descriptions to any of the available languages to choose from.

Tag auto complete

This feature works much like any search bar you’ll encounter. It will give you suggestions based on what you’ve typed so far. It’s really helpful when you’re trying to think of unique ideas. You’ll even see a handful of relevant keywords on the results which will give you a better idea of what you’re looking for.

Templates

Here, you’ll be able to save keywords that you frequently use. You can segregate them into different categories so you don’t have to manually type them out each time you need them. It also makes your choices clear and helps you avoid wasting time and making mistakes.

Web suite SEO

This is where you’ll be spending most of your time optimization-wise. This is where you’ll be able to perform bulk SEO tasks, add channel tags, and have an in-depth view of tags added by your competitors.

VidIQ bulk seo

Channel auditing

If you already have an existing account - or really even if you don’t have much in the way of content yet, you’ll love having this feature. Think of it as your 24/7 channel consultant. This is where you’ll find all the statistical data when it comes to your entire channel.

It displays all the information that is relevant to your channel including channel performance, the kind of content that is performing the best, viewer interactions, competitor information, top playlists, and traffic from competitor sources. All the information is based heavily on views per hour, which gives you a well-detailed look into what is working for your channel.

You’ll also be able to see where your content and channel are floundering. This will help you gauge whether you should look elsewhere or if there’s something you need to improve in that regard.

Suggestions

Here’s where you’ll be able to see how optimized your titles, tags, and descriptions are. Basically, this is where you’ll see if you’re missing anything like cards, thumbnails, and more.

You’ll see an assortment of red numbers if there’s anything that requires your attention which makes it easier for you to navigate the section.

Competitors

One of the fastest ways for your channel to progress on YouTube is to create content that can compete with similar accounts. I don’t mean copying what’s being done, but it gives you a good sort of starting point when you know what type of videos your audience likes. Top-performing videos will also utilize tags that can help you boost your own views.

VidIQ Competitors tab

This tool helps you leverage your competitor’s work and apply it to your own strategy to boost your channel. Basically, this tool walks you through three of the most important things competitor stats can give you: highest viewed content, content popularity, and subscriber growth by content.

Let’s take a look at the different things you can do here.

Save competing channels

One of the sections you should look into is adding your competitor channels. This allows you to save competitors that you want to watch the stats for. This tab compares your channel with all of the accounts you add on here based on views per hour.

Sorting

I like to keep my information well-sorted based on the statistics that are most important to me personally, so I really appreciate that you’re able to sort by date, views per hour, and a variety of other choices. This makes things not only easier to find, but it helps keep you on your toes with your competitor’s content as well.

Think of it this way: you’ll be able to find the best-performing videos from your competitors any which way you want.

Export top keywords

This nifty feature allows you to see and copy the top-performing keywords your competing accounts use. You can then use these for your channel and boost your views.

Web access

I mentioned this tool briefly earlier. And I can not stress this enough - it’s one of the best features you’ll come across on this platform. You’ll be able to see all the statistical information of your competitor’s top performing videos here. It displays well on the Chrome extension and web app so you’re covered with valuable information wherever you try to look for it.

View velocity

This tool is handy for comparing various videos on YouTube to see how an audience responds to them. Basically, you’ll see the entire interaction journey of any video you choose on the platform and compare it with any video of your choosing as long as it’s uploaded on YT.

VidIQ View velocity

You’ll be able to view stats for the last few hours or up to the past 28 days. Think of this as a tool that helps you visibly gauge how well your content measures up to others. Or finding who your biggest competitor is.

Channel average

Here, you’ll see how well or poorly your video is performing against your other content. This will help you find the right kind of videos to post that your audience responds well to.

Last watched video

When you watch a series of videos on the same topic, you’ll see how each of those perform against each other. This shows you the top-performing channel in that niche and helps you identify how you can measure up and improve your content to top theirs.

Channel comparison

You compared various videos before, but did you know you can compare channel averages too? If you want an in-depth study into which channel performs the best or how well you measure up against certain accounts, this is where you’ll be able to do it.

Playlist comparison

YouTube playlists are often overlooked, but they’re one of the biggest factors that help creators get seen. It improves your views since your videos are played one after the other, so you get more views. Much like the channel and video comparing feature, you’ll be able to do the same.

You’ll also be able to track the individual performances of each video on the playlist. This way, you’re able to gauge whether it’s a good addition or not.

Trend alerts

Tracking keyword performance is one of the key features that make this platform great. Basically, you’ll gain insight on trending keywords, as well as how well certain KWs are performing. You’ll also be able to check how well your competitor’s videos are doing on a trending topic.

VidIQ Trend alerts

And of course, it also alerts you when there’s popular content you should look into that is covered by your niche. It’s really helpful since it keeps you on your toes. Think of it as a suggestion tool, showing you all the important videos you need to stay on top of. You can use it as inspiration to give you a general direction on how you can create content that incorporates current trends.

Adding trend alerts lets you determine how you receive your notifications and how frequently you want them to come through. And if you really want to be on top of your game, you can set up a watchlist that shows you videos that are trending from competitor accounts.

Another cool thing is that VidIQ also shows you what’s currently trending on YouTube.

Productivity

VidIQ is really great at providing you with features that will inspire you to be active on the platform. This section hosts an assortment of essential tools that will not only make your journey as a creator more convenient but efficient too.

For example, you’ll be able to bulk edit and copy cards and endscreens. On the other hand, the comment template section comes with various comment ideas that will help you save time from thinking of different and appropriate ways to respond to comments on your or other videos.

Furthermore, you’ll also be able to download metadata. It’s handy if you like to keep backups and have all your information readily available for use in the future. And finally, the handy thumbnail generator helps you create attractive and well-optimized thumbnails for your videos.

Achievements and statistics

Keep yourself motivated by your wins and channel’s improvements. You’ll see your various milestones on a handy dashboard that will keep you positive especially when you’re not too happy with current video performances.

VidIQ Achievements and statistics

You’ll also see a “target goal” announcement at the top of the dashboard. It will show you an estimate of how long it will take until you reach a certain milestone. It displays your total views, subscribers, uploads, likes, hours watched, and comments.

If you want to share your achievements, you can easily download or export them to your chosen platforms. It will show the statistics for your best months. It’s fairly easy to share achievements for specific videos as well. All you need is the Chrome extension. You’ll be able to click the Achievements button on the left-hand navigation bar.

Furthermore, you’ll also be able to view real-time channel and video performance. This helps you view how well you’re doing as it progresses. It will also show you how much further you need to go before you get monetized.

User interface

One of the best things about the platform is its UI. It’s streamlined, well-designed, and easy to navigate. I like how it’s filled with useful tools that not only help you scale your channel, but it also helps you organize all your data more easily.

But more than that, its design is well-suited for beginners and non-tech savvy users. Truly, you’ll appreciate it especially if you hate looking at confusing data sets for long periods. Its user experience whether you’re on the web application or extension, it doesn’t have a large learning curve so you’ll be able to figure it out easily.

VidIQ academy

This is basically a 30-day course that walks you through the best strategies. You’ll have access to multiple modules that will take you from YouTube noob to pro in one month.

VidIQ pros and cons

The platform is extremely handy for anyone using it. And its abundance of features and tools means you have a lot that you’ll enjoy. Let’s take a look at its benefits below:

Despite its benefits, there are bound to be at least a few hiccups when it comes to the software. Take a quick look at them below:

Cons

  • You need to be on the paid plan to use the keyword research tool
  • It needs a bit more intuitiveness
  • Its best tools are only available in the paid plan

VidIQ pricing plans

There are basically four plans to choose from. The basic option is free forever, and best for anyone who wants to give the software a try before making a commitment. It’s also a good option for anyone who is just starting out on YouTube.

VidIQ alternatives

If you still want to explore your options, there are two top competitors for this software. It all depends on your budget and your preferences so make sure you do your research before diving deep into any one of them.

Let’s take a quick look at its competitors below:

Tubebuddy

This software is one of the most popular in the industry - if only because it’s used by many creators.

Tubebuddy

It’s certainly cheaper compared to VidIQ with plans starting at $9 a month going up to $49. One of its most prominent features is the A/B split testing that allows you to test out different versions of your content so you can determine which has the best audience response.

Its affiliate program is highly lucrative and it’s also YouTube certified. It has a wide range of straightforward features, including soundtracks, 4k motion graphics, and video promotion and optimization.

Its free plan is also somewhat more extensive compared to VidIQ and there are also more options when it comes to customer support such as Twitter and phone contact.

Unfortunately, the dashboard can get confusing when you’re on the YouTube page. Its A/B testing is also quite basic and its site navigation is less organized when compared to its competitors.

That said, it’s a powerful tool that is great for anyone who is looking for something much more affordable.

Video marketing blaster

Unlike your other options, you don’t get a free plan with this software. Regardless, it’s a practical and convenient tool to use. It has a great user interface and niche analysis module that shows you your stat goals to rank higher in your niche.

Video Marketing Blaster Review

Its main selling point is that it allows you to funnel in traffic to your videos directly. You’ll like how incredibly easy it is to navigate and how little of a learning curve is required for you to effectively use the platform.

But its best feature is the fact that you don’t have to pay for a monthly fee. It’s only $26.19 for lifetime use, not including its upsells so it’s a great deal all-in-all.

You should consider it if you don’t want to pay monthly fees and want to get amazing results in a snap of your finger.

VidIQ review: is it worth it?

Overall, I really like how simple the software is to use. I like that it comes with a free plan, but if you really want to make the most of its features, you may need to invest more money than you’re ready to part with. It does get expensive, but if you’re satisfied with the user interface, I can tell you that it’s well worth it.

But don’t take my word for it. Go ahead and see it for yourself.

Who knows? You might end up loving it from the moment you sign up. Just make sure you explore all of your options before you drop over $100 on the software.

Don’t get me wrong - it’s a great tool. But if you’re not willing to spend all of your time scaling your channel from the first month, you’ll be out of pocket in less than a year.

So take stock of your resources, think of all the features and if you’ll have everything you need first. Don’t just jump into the first platform you see because of raving reviews.
