What is AWeber? Since its comeback in popularity this year, we’ve been seeing the platform pop up more often in the digital space. Not many people know this, but the tool has been around since 1998 and is one of the leading HTML email automation tools in the market. 

In today’s Aweber review, we’ll take an in-depth look at what it has to offer, plus how much it costs.

What is AWeber?

It is an email marketing application (similar to Mailchimp) that allows you to automate your entire mailing list. This saves you a lot of time from having to check in with your customers individually, collecting leads manually, and responding to certain activities on your site or landing pages

Basically, it automates the entire customer capture and retention process for you so you’re able to keep in touch with your leads as much as you need to. 

The company was founded in 1998 and has amassed at least 100,000 users to this day. 

What features does AWeber have to offer?

The tool has more than just a handful of qualities built into its program. Let’s take a quick look at its best attributes:

  • Importing and hosting your mailing lists
  • A wide selection of easy to use templates for newbies or those in a rush
  • Autoresponding ability
  • Basic automated marketing functionality
  • Highly responsive email designs
  • Basic and advanced analytics
  • A/B split testing capabilities
  • RSS and blog-to-email performance
  • List segmentation ability
  • Landing page builder and editor 
  • 24/7 live customer support that’s easy to reach
  • Third-party application integration competence (ecommerce apps, etc)

Don’t think you’re getting away with just a vague description of what each of these AWeber features can do.

Let’s take an in-depth look at each key attribute the email automation tool has to offer.

Importing and hosting mailing lists

Importing and hosting your email list is an easy and straightforward process. Hosting your customer directory is pretty much similar to other platforms at its most basic form.

The main difference and advantage AWeber has over its competition lies in its importing function. The email marketing software allows you to import existing mail addresses directly into autoresponder cycles. 

This feature isn’t readily offered by many of the program’s competitors which is a nice edge to have. 

Moreover, actually adding a pre-existing mailing list can be done either manually, by copying and pasting information in rows, or uploading your contact records in any of the following file formats:

  • TSV
  • CSV
  • TXT

When importing a huge list of contacts, it’s important to understand that you’ll be required to answer a few spam-prevention questions. This is a standard procedure all similar programs offer and in some cases - like if your directory reaches at least 10,000 records, AWeber spam experts will need at least 24 hours to review your actions.

Template options

AW has an HTML newsletter template library with over 700 guides to choose from. This is one of the largest collections compared to its competitors in the market. 

Despite the large database, I have to be honest. Most of the designs looked a bit dated to me. But with more than seven hundred to choose from, I’m sure you’ll find one that suits your business just fine

There are certain pros and cons to having such a large variety of options at your disposal. First, it can cause issues with indecisiveness. After all, how can you be sure you found the right one if you haven’t browsed through them all yet?

On the other hand, it’s nice to know you have a lot of alternatives if needed. 

Then there’s the issue of some of the designs looking a bit repetitive. Of course, the AWeber platform has a ton of varying styles, but do you really think they all look completely different from each other?

That said, you could also consider it a plus since those minor changes or similarities could be exactly what you need for your small business

Personally, I’m a fan of the basics. I don’t think I’ll ever have a need for such an extensive catalog of templates. At the same time, I can’t deny that it is impressive and a good move on the company’s part. 

Responsive emails

All Aweber email templates are what we call responsive in the industry. Responsiveness simply means your newsletters will be automatically resized to best fit the screen or device they’re being viewed on. 

Gone are the days where computers were an absolute vehicle for sending and receiving online correspondence. Nowadays, you have to consider emails being opened on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets as well. 

Unlike some other platforms, you don’t have to worry about creating separate emails for different devices or running the risk of your email marketing campaigns getting received in the wrong format. It’s easy to view how each email will be received on a variety of gadgets. 

Web font capability

One of the things I enjoy about AWeber is that they allow you to integrate web fonts into your efforts. This is a feature that is missing from many service providers which I find entirely inconvenient since I want my branding to be clear and concise with everything I sent out. And that includes the kind of fonts I want to use. 

Often, I find it difficult to choose from preset typefaces in a program. Most of them seem either outdated, too “whimsical”, or are just downright tacky. Which, of course, depends on your individual taste. 

Nevertheless, I appreciate that the marketing automation software extends your choices and allows for better customizability to make room for your individual brand choices. 

In addition to the ability to add web fonts, you also have a few in-built choices on the application such as:

  • Noticia Text

  • Roboto

  • Source Sans Pro

All standard typefaces are pretty basic and are similar to the ones you’ll find on other platforms as well. 

Autoresponder features

AWeber claims to have invented the autoresponder feature. You’d expect the “pioneer” of automatic follow-up emails to be at the forefront of their invention. Unfortunately, they’re only so-so in this regard.

Before I get into the whys, let’s take a look at the positives of this attribute that the program does correctly. 

  • Setting up automated emails based on a time interval is relatively easy to do. So you can expect that they execute the basics really well. What does this mean? It simply implies that you can set when certain correspondences will be sent out without a problem. For example, you can automatically send out an email after a lead signs up. A follow-up email can be sent after a few days, and you can also set a certain discount code to be mailed after a week. 
  • AW has the ability to perform more advanced automations depending on your combination of tags and rules. 

Unfortunately, the platform lacks many simplified advanced features that its competition offers. If you don’t mind the hassle and trying to figure out how everything works or how you can send certain automated newsletters, then there’s no need to worry. 

Otherwise, you might want to look into other tools like ActiveCampaign or GetResponse

Marketing automations

One thing you should know is that AWeber is not a CRM tool. This explains why they don’t focus on marketing features you’ll find in other products in the market like ClickFunnels. However, they do a good job of offering your bare necessities.

This attribute allows you to create automated workflows based on your customer journey and activity on the website. This automatically sends mails based on clicks, past visits, purchases, and more. 

It’s a good feature to have. However, like I said it isn’t advanced or substantial in any way. You’ll get the basic functionality of it. 

But other than that, AW hasn’t gone further. 

AMP for your emails

Most of AWeber’s competition doesn’t have an AMP feature in-built into the application. This attribute allows your recipients to interact with your email like setting up an appointment or sending an RSVP to your event invitation right on the email page. 

Moreover, you also have a list of dynamic content that you can add to your newsletters. This includes everything from weather updates to football scores. This gives AW a significant edge over its competitors and is one of the features I most appreciate about the platform.

The tool offers two plan options - a lifetime free plan and a pro option. Obviously, the free option costs nothing to operate. The only drawback is, you can only stay on the plan until 500 leads sign up to your list. This isn’t a bad thing of course, considering most others offer only a free trial.

But if you want to utilize the pro feature, there are five price tiers you need to consider. 

  • There are three billing options: monthly, quarterly, and yearly. 
  • Pricing ranges from $19 to $149 a month. 
  • Opting for quarterly billing earns you a 14% discount on the monthly fees charged every three months.
  • You get a discount of 14.9% if you choose the annual billing option. Otherwise, you’re charged full price. 
  • You can grow your mailing directory up to 25,000 subscribers. 
  • You can also contact AWeber support for a free quotation if you have over 25,000 leads.

Final words. Is AWeber worth it?

There is a lot to be said for a company that claims to have pioneered autoresponders back in the late 80’s. While it’s certainly not the best in the market and has a lot of room for improvement, it’s hard to deny that it’s a worthy platform if you’re looking for specific HTML emailing features such as AMP functionality. 

If you’re unsure, you can always try out their free plan.

However, keep in mind that the program isn’t meant for CRM so you might want to look into alternatives if you’d like to get advanced marketing done within the platform.
